…after using Zantac?
What is Zantac?
Zantac is a common heartburn medication chemically known as ranitidine hydrochloride. It belongs to a class of drugs called histamine H2-receptor antagonists, or H2 blockers, which decreases stomach acid in the stomach. Zantac is available over the counter and by prescription. It can be used to treat heartburn, peptic ulcers, gastroesophageal reflux disease, and related issues.
How does Zantac cause Cancer?
In September 2019, the online pharmacy Valisure informed the FDA of the presence of Nitrosodimethylamine (NDMA) contaminating some batches of Zantac. A formal investigation followed. NDMA has been listed as a probable carcinogenic compound by the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) and US National Toxicology Program. Due to the unstable molecules of the medication, it is believed that ranitidine, the active ingredient in Zantac, can form harmful levels of NDMA in the digestive tract. NDMA is more likely to cause cancer after exposure to high doses over a long period of time.
On April 1, 2020, the FDA issued an immediate market withdrawal of all ranitidine products. In the weeks and months leading up to the official recall, major retailers such as Walmart, CVS, and Walgreens have engaged in voluntary recalls, pulling Zantac off of shelves and prohibiting future sales.
Zantac Lawsuit
Evidence shows that the pharmaceutical company responsible for producing Zantac concealed the link to cancer so as not to disturb profits – leading to a record-breaking $1 billion in sales. Plaintiffs accuse Sanofi and Boerhringer Ingelheim of manufacturing and marketing a medication they knew, or should have known, is contaminated with a carcinogenic chemical without disclosing the risks to consumers or the government.
