Have you been diagnosed with...
Maculopathy:
a pathological condition that causes retinal injury
…after using Elmiron?
The Problem with Elmiron
Elmiron is a prescription drug manufactured by Janssen Pharmaceuticals used to treat interstitial cystitis, a condition that causes chronic pain in the bladder and pelvic area. Elmiron is currently the only FDA-approved medication used to treat the illness and has been used by patients for years or decades. Recent research from the Emory Eye Center reveals that long-term exposure to pentosan polysulfate (PPS), the active ingredient in Elmiron, can cause maculopathy, an eye disorder that can result in retinal damage and severe vision loss.
A study by the American Academy of Ophthalmology found that the active ingredient in Elmiron, pentosan polysulfate sodium, is toxic to the retina, and estimate that about one-quarter of patients using Elmiron may suffer from eye damage in the form of macular degeneration.
Macular Degeneration
Retinal maculopathy can cause a variety of symptoms, including pain in the eye, vision irregularities, vision changes in low light, and permanent blindness. Patients who have been prescribed and using Elmiron since 1996 and have been clinically diagnosed with “pigmentary maculopathy of unknown etiology ” , the form of macular degeneration that has been linked to Elmiron use, may qualify to file a lawsuit.
